High-rise building fires are significant events in architectural and safety history, often leading to major changes in global building codes and fire safety regulations. Here are some of the most notable tall building fires from around the world:

The Great Nigeria Insurance House (Lagos, Nigeria, 2025)
A 25-storey building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, caught fire on December 24, 2025, affecting the upper floors and resulting in multiple casualties.

Wang Fuk Court apartment complex (Hong Kong, China, 2025)
The Wang Fuk Court fire was a catastrophic five-alarm blaze that occurred in the Tai Po District of Hong Kong on November 26, 2025. It is recorded as the deadliest residential fire in the city’s history and the most fatal fire incident since 1948.

Plasco Building (Tehran, Iran, 2017)
The 17-story Plasco Building was a landmark in Tehran. During a major fire, the building suffered a progressive structural collapse while firefighters were still inside battling the flames. The incident resulted in the deaths of 16 firefighters and 6 civilians.

Grenfell Tower Fire (London, UK, 2017)
One of the most devastating modern high-rise fires, it started due to a faulty refrigerator-freezer on the fourth floor. The fire spread rapidly up the exterior cladding of the 24-story building, leading to 72 deaths. It sparked a global conversation and massive safety audits regarding the use of combustible aluminum composite material (ACM) cladding.

The Address Downtown Dubai (Dubai, UAE, 2015)
On New Year’s Eve, a massive fire broke out at this 63-story luxury hotel and residential skyscraper. The fire was fueled by external cladding and illuminated the night sky just as fireworks celebrations were beginning nearby. Remarkably, despite the scale of the fire, there were no fatalities.

Beijing Television Cultural Center (Beijing, China, 2009)
During the Lantern Festival, stray fireworks ignited the exterior of this nearly completed 52-story skyscraper. The building was engulfed in flames, largely due to the flammable insulation material used on the exterior. One firefighter died in the incident.

Windsor Tower (Madrid, Spain, 2005)
A fire broke out on the 21st floor of this 32-story office building and burned for over 24 hours. The fire was so intense that the upper steel portions of the building collapsed. Because the building was undergoing renovations and was empty at the time, there were no fatalities.

One Meridian Plaza (Philadelphia, USA, 1991)
This 38-story office building suffered a fire that began on the 22nd floor. The fire burned for 18 hours and was only stopped when it reached the 30th floor, which was protected by an automatic sprinkler system. The disaster led to the building's eventual demolition and influenced laws requiring sprinklers in all high-rise commercial buildings.
